1. Exercise Smarter - In the past it was thought that the best way to burn fat was to do a slow steady exercise such as walking, jogging or bike riding at a constant speed. And while this will burn fat while you are performing the exercise, what research has found is that once you stop moving the fat burning ends. There is a way to exercise smarter and that is to simply vary your intensity during your exercise session.

Here is an example using a treadmill exercise. Start with a 2 minute warm up at a low speed (your heart rate and breathing are slightly increased), then up your speed to high for 2 minutes (you should feel in control but unable to talk without interrupting to breathe). Repeat this variable speed drill until you reach 18 minutes then cool down and your exercise is done in half the time yet your body will continue to burn fat at a higher rate for the entire day.

2. Cycle Your Carbohydrates - Low carb diets are always making the news and they can work but the problem is they are extremely hard to stick with because of their restrictive nature and your body doesn't function well on no carbs (carbs are fuel). The answer is to cycle your carbohydrates. Try this method on Sunday through Wednesday eat no carbs, on Thursday and Friday add in low Glycemic Index carbs (carbs that are whole such as whole grain breads, fruit, rice, sweet potatoes, etc.) and then on Saturday add a "Cheat Day" which is described in tip 3.

3. CHEAT! Yes, that's right, when you restrict your calories week after week your body goes into protective mode and slows your metabolism to preserve your stored energy reserves (i.e. FAT). So the way to work with your body while losing weight is to add a strategic "Cheat Day" to your diet week. Try this, eat as above in tip 2 and then on Saturday overeat your favorite foods: pizza, burgers, ice cream, etc. All of these foods convince your body there is no starvation present and in turn your metabolism kicks back up to high gear and your fat burning potential skyrockets.
